Keerthy Suresh says Saani Kaayidham showed her “badass yet vulnerable side”; opens up about balancing offbeat films and commercial cinema

National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh has spoken about her approach to choosing roles, revealing how her performance in the Tamil film Saani Kaayidham caught the attention of filmmaker Dharmaraj. Known for moving between performance-driven projects and commercial entertainers, the actress said she enjoys exploring different aspects of her craft and hopes to maintain a balance between the two.

Reflecting on how Saani Kaayidham influenced Dharmaraj’s decision to consider her for a character, Keerthy recalled their first meeting and his response to the film. The project featured her in a revenge-driven role that required her to portray both vulnerability and a more intense side of the character.

Keerthy shared, “I think Dharmaraj saw Saani Kaayidham, which I did in Tamil. It was a very badass character, but also a very vulnerable and different kind of character, where she goes on a journey of revenge. I remember during our first meeting, he told me that he had seen the film. That was when I understood why he wanted me for this character. I feel blessed that I have been able to explore different kinds of films. I enjoy doing offbeat films and projects that allow me to perform, but I also love doing films where I get to dance and explore other aspects of being an actor. I want to maintain a balance between the two, and I am really glad that I have been in a position to do that. I think it is a blessing because the opportunities that have come my way have always been beyond what I imagined for myself.”

Her comments underline an approach that does not limit her to one particular genre. While offbeat films offer opportunities to explore complex characters, commercial cinema allows her to engage with dance, music and other elements of mainstream storytelling.

Keerthy, who earned acclaim for her portrayal of actress Savitri in Mahanati, has continued to work across different kinds of projects. Her filmography reflects her interest in taking on roles that offer varied creative experiences rather than following a single career trajectory.

The actress’s upcoming lineup includes Sathyavan Savithiri, January 12 Vidudala, Raftaar and Rowdy Janardhana. These projects add to her ongoing slate as she continues to explore different cinematic spaces.

For Keerthy, the aim remains to pursue roles that challenge her as a performer while retaining room for the entertainment-driven aspects of cinema that she also enjoys.
