Made-in-India Containers Get Cabinet Push With 70% Local Content Rule for Steel and Couplers
Almost every product you buy or export travels inside a container. Except bulk commodities, nearly all global trade moves through these steel boxes. The catch? About 95 percent of container manufacturing happens in just one country, and shipping companies have long wanted a strong second player. Now the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Container Manufacturing Scheme. With Rs 10,000 crore over 13 years, it offers 3 percent interest subvention on capital investment, support for testing and certification, leasing of vacant land near major ports, and operational expenditure assistance. Steel and couplers are part of the push, with a 70 percent local content requirement. The aim is to make India a global container manufacturing hub.
