OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Ads in India; Businesses Can Start Advertising With Rs 725 Daily Budget | Markets News

WPP and Omnicom will be OpenAI’s first agency partners for ChatGPT Ads in India. More than 50 brands are expected to go live with advertisements on the platform in the country this week, the company said.

The agency partnerships will cover strategy, creative, measurement, brand safety and campaign execution. OpenAI said the model is non-exclusive and that it will continue to work with other agencies.

“India is one of the most dynamic markets in the world for how people use ChatGPT to learn, build, and discover. Our weekly active users have doubled year-on-year, with many of them going beyond simple searches and changing how they make decisions,” said Dave Dugan, Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions at OpenAI.

“They ask questions, explore options, and weigh tradeoffs through conversation. With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape,” Dugan said.

“Our goal is to make those interactions useful, help marketers design for intelligent experiences, and preserve what makes ChatGPT valuable: independent answers, conversations that stay private from advertisers, and meaningful user control,” he added.

How ChatGPT Ads will work

OpenAI said ads may appear below a ChatGPT response when there is a relevant sponsored product or service. The advertisements will be clearly labelled as sponsored and will remain visually separate from ChatGPT’s responses. The company stressed that advertisements will not influence the answers generated by ChatGPT.

OpenAI said advertisers will not have access to users’ chats, chat history, memories or personal details. It also said it does not sell user data to advertisers.

Advertisers will instead receive aggregate campaign-performance data, such as impressions and clicks, rather than information about individual conversations.

Users will also be able to dismiss ads, provide feedback, see why an advertisement was shown, manage ad personalisation and clear data used for advertising.

Ads restricted on sensitive topics

OpenAI said ads will not be shown on accounts belonging to people who identify themselves, or are predicted, to be under 18. Advertisements will also not be eligible to appear alongside sensitive or regulated topics, including mental health and politics. The company said it would continue applying advertising policies aimed at limiting scams, misleading claims and other harmful content.

OpenAI said its advertising strategy is designed to support broader access to AI through free and lower-cost ChatGPT options while maintaining a separation between advertising and the answers provided by the chatbot.

Opportunity for Indian businesses

The company said ChatGPT Ads could help established companies, small businesses and emerging Indian brands reach consumers when they are actively exploring products, comparing options or considering a purchase. OpenAI expects to introduce additional advertising formats, objectives and buying options over time based on feedback from users and advertisers.

The company said user trust and the quality of the ChatGPT experience would remain a priority over maximising time spent on the platform or short-term advertising revenue.
