Why is Himesh Reshammiya PAYING producers instead of charging them for his songs? Singer-composer reveals his business model; opens up about negotiations with Sooraj Barjatya for Yeh Prem Mol Liya

Himesh Reshammiya recently had a conversation with Komal Nahta and opened up about his music label, Himesh Reshammiya Melodies, and its unique business model. When asked, “When you sign a film, would you keep the music rights to yourself?”, Himesh replied, “Yes. Meri jo bhi price hogi as composer, woh hata ke jo price aapko market mein mil rahi hai, woh main dunga tumko.”

An industry insider explained how this model works with an example, “Suppose a music label offers a producer Rs. 5 crores for a film’s music rights, while Himesh’s fee as a music composer is Rs. 2 crores. In such a scenario, Himesh would forgo his Rs. 2 crore fee and additionally pay the producer Rs. 3 crores to acquire the music rights for his own label.”

Himesh has composed songs for Sooraj Barjatya’s next, Yeh Prem Mol Liya, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sharvari. When asked whether it was easy to convince the Barjatyas about giving away the music rights to his label, he replied, “When they came to me, they asked me to only compose the music and said that we can (talk about who should hold the music rights). However, I replied, ‘I will do a great job and that’s my model. Ek model maine apne daayre mein fit kar diya hain’. And I am paying what the price of the music is in the market.”

Himesh confessed, “I agree that I would lose out on some films due to this model. The makers may feel that they want a higher price for the music rights (than what I am offering), or I may feel that the price is too high, ya mujhe lagega ki yeh price zyada hain. Or I may believe, ‘I want this film, but some might offer money for its songs’. However, I am not insecure. I am very happy with what I have.”

What if Himesh Reshammiya had lost out on a film like Yeh Prem Mol Liya? He confessed, “That would have been okay. I don’t have that desperation.”

Who was the toughest to convince in the Barjatya family? He explained, “Convincing everyone was not easy. Lekin woh log itne acche hain. My main point was, ‘Pehle music suno. Aap aao, jam karenge, nahin hua toh koi baat nahin. Mere gaane mere paas hi rahenge. Pehle kaam toh karte hain, yaar’! Let’s be creatively clear. Then we should be monetarily clear. Fir jo zubaan di hain, woh fulfil karni chahiye aur neeyat saaf honi chahiye. Then you need to give your best.”

Besides Yeh Prem Mol Liya, Himesh Reshammiya has also composed music for upcoming films such as Mahesh Bhatt’s Veer Pahariya-starrer Naam – To Live Is War, the Emraan Hashmi-starrer Gunmaaster G9, Anil Sharma’s Arjun Naga and Vikram Bhatt’s horror film 1920: Cold Winter. Interestingly, his music label, Himesh Reshammiya Melodies, also holds the music rights to all these films, just as it does for Yeh Prem Mol Liya.
