West Indies set to miss 2027 ODI World Cup direct spot again

West Indies are on course to miss direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup for the third successive cycle, with the Qualifiers now their most likely route into the tournament. The two-time World Cup champions, who won the trophy in 1975 and 1979, are currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI rankings with 77 points following their series against New Zealand.

The cut-off date for direct qualification is September 30, 2026. Co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe hold automatic berths, and the remaining eight direct spots go to the highest-ranked sides in the ICC ODI rankings on that date. Teams such as Afghanistan, ranked 8th with 90 points. Bangladesh sit 9th with 83 points, leaving West Indies in a spot of bother.

Afghanistan’s 92-run victory over Ireland in the second ODI has further complicated West Indies’ position. Ireland were bowled out for 207 while chasing 299, with Rashid Khan contributing 63 runs in Afghanistan’s total.

What matches do West Indies have left before the cut-off?

Shai Hope and Co. have two confirmed ODIs remaining before the September 30 cut-off, both against India in September, scheduled for September 27 and September 30. Those two matches represent the Caribbean side’s only remaining opportunity to improve their points tally and ranking position before the deadline.

Even with two victories against India, it would not be enough for the West Indies to leapfrog enough sides to secure a direct berth. Results across multiple concurrent series will shape the final standings, making automatic qualification extremely difficult from their current position.

What happens if West Indies miss direct qualification?

Should West Indies fail to reach the top eight by September 30, 2026, they will compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier, which is scheduled to run from February 22 to March 23, 2027. That would make it the third consecutive World Cup cycle in which West Indies have been forced down the qualification route.

West Indies went through the Qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup. Then, they failed to reach the 2023 edition altogether, losing to Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, and Scotland in the Super Six stage of the Qualifiers. Under the 2027 Qualifier format, the winner earns a direct place in the main tournament, while teams finishing second to fourth enter a Super Series for a second chance at qualification.
