Two dead, several trapped in Kurla landslide in Mumbai

Two person were dead and one was injured after a landslide hit the Kurla region in Mumbai eastern suburb on Wednesday (August 12, 2026). At least six persons are reported to be trapped under the debris. Rescue operation is underway. NDRF personnel and 50 BMC personnels are carrying out the operation.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported this as a level II incident which occurred around 3:48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Near Rathod Medical in Kurla West. BMC Mayor Ritu Tawade has also reached the spot. 

The two deceased are identified as Sohel Ansari (18) and Mohamad Ansari (14). Both were sent to Rajawadi Hospital. CMO Dr. Vishal declared Mohamad as brought dead, while Sohel sustained head injuries.  

“Debris fell on nearby rooms of the chawl structure. As per witnesses, six to eight persons were trapped under the debris,” a BMC official said.

On ground, two divisional fire officers (DFO)assistant divisional fire officer (ADFO), two senior station officers (SrSO), four station officers, four fire engines, two fire tenders, two rescue vehicles, two mobile water tankers, one water quick response vehicle have joined the rescue operation.
