Tom Westley resigns as Essex captain after seven seasons in charge

Tom Westley succeeded Ryan ten Doeschate as captain in January 2020, inheriting the armband when Essex were the reigning county champions. The 2020 County Championship was suspended entirely owing to the Covid pandemic, yet Westley guided the side to glory in the Bob Willis Trophy, the emergency red-ball competition that filled the void that summer.

Under his leadership, Essex posted top-four finishes in three consecutive seasons across 2022, 2023 and 2024. Form dipped in 2025, when they finished sixth, and the 2026 campaign proved harder still. Essex concluded the season eighth in Division One, a single position above the relegation zone, after their final fixture against Glamorgan ended in a draw. Westley was candid about the personal struggles that shaped his decision.

“Personally, I feel that my biggest value is scoring runs and contributing to Essex victories, something which I haven’t been able to achieve this year. For that reason, I feel now is the right time for a change and for the club to explore a new direction,” said Westley as quoted by BBC.

His explanation centred on output rather than any external pressure. Westley has always defined his contribution through runs scored and matches won, and he felt his 2026 season fell short of that standard. No successor has been named, and Essex will now begin the process of identifying their next captain.

What does Essex’s Division One status depend on?

Despite finishing eighth, Essex cannot yet be certain of their place in Division One next season. Leicestershire were docked 27 points during the 2026 campaign for breaching pitch regulations and have lodged an appeal against that sanction.

Essex finished the season with a 25-point advantage over Leicestershire in the final standings. Should the appeal succeed and all 27 points be reinstated, Leicestershire would leapfrog Essex in the table, sending Essex down instead. The outcome of that hearing will therefore determine whether Essex compete in Division One or Division Two in 2027, adding an unresolved administrative dimension to an already significant moment of transition for the club.
