SS Rajamouli says Varanasi travels across different worlds, time zones and mythology; explains “adventure scheme” of Mahesh Babu-Priyanka Chopra Jonas starrer
SS Rajamouli has opened up about his decision to keep details of his upcoming film Varanasi under wraps. Speaking to Brazilian YouTube channel ALMANAQUE21 on the sidelines of the 50th São Paulo International Film Festival, where he received the Leon Cakoff Career Award, the filmmaker said describing the scale of the Mahesh Babu-starrer in words can be difficult.
Rajamouli said, “Sometimes I don’t, because the words don’t do justice to the scope of the film. That’s the reason why I released a glimpse of what Varanasi is to be. Instead of putting any words to it, we made a video which we released last year. It takes the audience through the worlds of Varanasi, what they’re going to experience, without telling them anything.”
SS Rajamouli reveals Varanasi travels across different worlds
While Varanasi has been described as an adventure involving time travel, Rajamouli added, “It is an adventure which travels through different worlds. It travels through Antarctica, through Africa, through the city of Varanasi, in different time zones. It travels into the time of mythology, where you see giants, Gods, and all that stuff.”
However, according to Rajamouli, the emotional core of the film remains grounded in human relationships. He added, “But everything is driven by the emotion of a father and son, and the emotion of a man and a woman…the love between them. That drives this entire adventure scheme.”
Directed by SS Rajamouli, Varanasi is co-written by his father V Vijayendra Prasad and cousin SS Kanchi. The film is produced by Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business. Mahesh Babu stars as Rudhra, while Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran essays the antagonist Kumbha. The film marks Rajamouli’s first feature after RRR, his 2022 blockbuster starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR.
