Shanaya Kapoor cut her hair and skipped makeup for Student of the Year: After Dark, reveals director Reema Maya: “There was never any pushback”
Shanaya Kapoor underwent a noticeable transformation for her upcoming series Student of the Year: After Dark, according to director Reema Maya. The actor, who plays twin sisters Aditi and Ayesha Shroff in the series, moved away from her usual glamorous appearance to suit the characters.
In a recent conversation, Reema spoke about Shanaya’s approach to the roles, revealing that the actor was open to making changes to her appearance, including cutting her hair and going without makeup. “I would present an idea and discuss it with her, and there was never any pushback. She cut her hair for me; she has such beautiful, silky hair. I told her to stop using conditioner and frizz it out,” Reema said.
The director added that the team deliberately gave Shanaya a less polished look to match the characters. “We did not give her any makeup. In fact, we had to de-glamourise her, so we added dark circles, freckles and imperfections to her, and she was fully there for it,” she said.
Reema also highlighted Shanaya’s willingness to prioritise the role over her on-screen appearance. “There was never any preoccupation about how she was looking or whether she would look glamorous. There was complete commitment to the character she was playing,” the director added.

Shanaya Kapoor plays twins in Student of the Year: After Dark
Student of the Year: After Dark features Shanaya in a double role as Aditi and Ayesha Shroff. The series takes the familiar campus setting of the Student of the Year franchise in a darker direction, with a story centred on mystery and suspense.
The project follows Shanaya’s recent work in Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan and Tu Yaa Main as she takes on a different kind of role.
Directed by Reema Maya, Student of the Year: After Dark will premiere on JioHotstar on November 13.
