Shadman Islam ankle injury clouds Bangladesh’s second Test vs WI

At Sylhet on November 6, Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam was stretchered off the field after twisting his left ankle while fielding during the West Indies’ first innings in the second Test. The incident occurred in the 78th over when Shadman, stationed in the slip cordon, chased a delivery that Mehidy Hasan Miraz had nudged towards the fine-leg boundary off West Indies batter Amir Jangoo. Shadman slipped as he attempted to collect the ball, and he twisted his left ankle in the process.

Medical staff attended to the 31-year-old on the field before he was stretchered off. Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan confirmed the nature of the injury, with the team subsequently placing Shadman under observation. His availability for the remainder of the second Test remains uncertain at this stage.

What did the Bangladesh physio say about Shadman’s condition?

After Shadman was taken off the field, the Bangladesh medical team assessed him immediately and communicated the initial findings to the media. Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan addressed the situation.

“Shadman suffered a left ankle twist. He is under observation. We will send him for an MRI scan,” with no further details on a recovery timeline available at that point,” he was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.

The injury is a significant concern for Bangladesh given Shadman’s contribution earlier in the series. In the first Test at Mirpur, he scored 105 off 234 balls, an innings that included 11 fours and represented his third Test century. That knock gave Bangladesh a first-innings lead in that match. Across his 33 Tests, Shadman has accumulated 1,696 runs at an average of 29.24, with two of his three Test centuries coming on home soil.

How did the second Test at Sylhet unfold before Shadman’s injury?

West Indies had closed the opening day at 235 for 4 after batting through 70 overs, with bad light forcing an early end to play on November 5. On the second morning, Amir Jangoo continued his innings and went on to make 133 off 212 balls, an effort that contained 13 fours and 2 sixes, before being dismissed by Hasan Mahmud. Off the very next delivery after Jangoo’s dismissal, Roston Chase was removed for a golden duck, caught by Litton Das off an inside edge.

Hasan Mahmud completed his five-wicket haul through a stumping by Litton Das, dismissing Joshua Bishop. On-field umpire Asif Yaqoob had initially given Justin Greaves out leg before wicket, but West Indies successfully reviewed the decision, with replays showing the ball had taken an inside edge onto the batter’s pad. Mehidy Hasan Miraz then removed Roston Chase, who had made 51 off 112 balls.

At the close of the first session on day two, West Indies stood at 322 for 8, with Jomel Warrican batting at number nine and Shamar Joseph unbeaten on 16. Hasan Mahmud’s five-wicket haul in this innings was his fifth in Test cricket and made him the first Bangladesh seamer to take five-wicket hauls in five different countries, as well as the first Bangladesh fast bowler to take a wicket via a stumping off his own bowling.
