Rare maxillary tumour removed from seven-year-old boy at government Dental Hospital in Chidambaram

Doctors at the Cuddalore Government Dental College and Hospital successfully performed a “rare and complex surgical procedure” on a seven-year-old boy diagnosed with a Giant Cell Granuloma, a rare tumour-like lesion of the upper jaw.

According to a press note, the boy’s family approached the hospital with a progressively enlarging swelling of the upper jaw, with complaints of difficulty in breathing, eating and mobility of the teeth.

Following detailed clinical examination and investigations, the medical team diagnosed a Giant Cell Granuloma of the maxilla. As the lesion was rapidly increasing in size and had begun to compromise the child’s airway, the doctors decided to proceed with urgent surgical management.

Considering the child’s young age and the location and extent of the tumour, administering general anesthesia was particularly challenging. However, the anaesthesia team managed the child with great skill and vigilance, ensuring safe administration of general anaesthesia.

A team of Oral and Maxillofacial surgesons performed a complex surgical procedure lasting four hours, during which the tumour was completely removed.

Given the rarity of the lesion, its location in the upper jaw and the associated airway compromise, the procedure was highly challenging. The surgery was successfully completed. The child is recovering well and remains stable under medical observation.

Doctors have advised parents to seek specialist medical evaluation without delay if children develop rapidly increasing jaw swelling, mobility of teeth and difficulty in eating or breathing problems.
