Ranbir Kapoor shares his take on AI taking over cinema; says, “Art is always more personal when there is a human touch to it”
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to find its way into different aspects of filmmaking, actors Ranbir Kapoor and Yash have shared their views on how the technology could influence the future of cinema. The two actors, who are currently promoting their upcoming film Ramayana, believe that while AI can be a useful tool in enhancing filmmaking, it cannot replace the human element involved in storytelling and performing arts.

Since the release of Ramayana‘s teaser, the film’s visual effects (VFX) and large-scale world-building have generated considerable discussion among audiences. While some viewers have appreciated the visuals, others have raised concerns about certain aspects of the film’s presentation. Amid these conversations, Ranbir and Yash recently spoke to BBC News about the growing use of AI in the film industry and the importance of using the technology responsibly.
Sharing his perspective, Ranbir emphasised that art becomes more personal when it involves human creativity and emotions. He acknowledged that AI, much like VFX and camera lenses, can contribute to the filmmaking process but maintained that it cannot take the place of human performers and storytellers. Ranbir said, “Art is always more personal when there is a human touch to it. I think AI like VFX or camera lenses, can be used as a tool to better your filmmaking. But from the medium we come from – of storytelling, of art, of performing art — and I don’t think AI can ever replace that.”
Yash also expressed similar concerns about the application of AI and highlighted the need to exercise caution while incorporating the technology into creative processes. He pointed out that filmmaking involves several people and that their contributions should be considered when adopting new technologies. Sharing his thoughts, Yash said, “We have to be responsible enough to understand that humans are involved in it, and we need to be very cautious in where all we apply this technology. We are survivors. We will come up with some idea or we will create something which even a machine would have to struggle with.”
Meanwhile, Ranbir also addressed the criticism surrounding Ramayana, particularly the discussions about its VFX and music. During an interaction at an India International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) event, the actor said that online trolling does not affect him significantly. He explained that he prefers to focus on people who genuinely care about his work, intentions and conduct rather than being influenced by public criticism.
Referring to the popular song lyric, Ranbir said, “What’s relevant today is this beauty of trolling online. It goes back to the good old song ‘Kuchh to log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna.’ I think that’s a great philosophy to actually follow in life. Don’t be bothered by what people are saying. What matters is the people who matter, the people who care for your work, your intention, and your kindness. That’s what matters the most.”
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana is being developed as a two-part adaptation of the Indian epic. Ranbir Kapoor will portray Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi will play Sita, while Yash will be seen as Ravana. The first instalment is scheduled to arrive in cinemas worldwide on November 5, 2026. The second part is expected to release around Diwali 2027.
