Ramesh Taurani reveals Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’s ‘Loveria’ was initially locked for a Shekhar Kapur film: “I told Jatin-Lalit, ‘Aaj se 20 saal tak bhi Shekhar Kapur koi film nahin banayega’!”

Ramesh Taurani and Kumar Taurani spoke to Komal Nahta about their journey and experience of working on the music of some important films in their career. Ramesh raised laughs as he shared an anecdote from the music sitting of Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992).

Ramesh Taurani said, “Working with G P Sippy saab was a great experience. We worked with him for the first time in Patthar Ke Phool (1991). Then, we joined hands for Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. Viveck Vaswani was its producer and he recommended Jatin-Lalit. We agreed. We asked Jatin-Lalit to compose a catchy song. They said, ‘We have one such song, but it’s for Shekhar Kapur’. We asked them to play the track. They played ‘Sardi Khaasi Na Malaria Hua, Main Gaya Yaaron Mujhko Loveria Hua’. This happened in 1991. I told Jatin-Lalit, ‘Aaj se 20 saal tak bhi Shekhar Kapur koi film nahin banayega’!”

Hence, Jatin-Lalit agreed to use ‘Loveria’ in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. When asked what made Ramesh Taurani to make the apt prediction, he smiled and replied, “I had interacted with Shekhar Kapur. I wanted to make a film with him named Champion; it was supposed to star Bobby Deol. I had a lot of interactions with him for almost 5-6 months. Ultimately, the film didn’t get made.”

Ramesh Taurani then recalled that the next music sitting of Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman took place in the presence of G P Sippy. He said, “Jatin-Lalit sang the song ‘Loveria’. However, G P Sippy saab didn’t understand what the word meant. We explained to him that it was a play on the word ‘malaria’. He asked them to sing the song again. The moment they reached the line ‘Main gaya yaaron mujhko’, he stopped them and said, ‘Now, wait’. He then suggested adding ‘Love Love Love’ before ‘Loveria Hua’. So, it was thanks to G P Sippy saab’s suggestion that ‘Love Love Love’ became a part of the song. He reasoned, ‘Public ko toh batao kya bol rahe ho tum log’! This is the beauty of making film music – you never know who will come up with what suggestion.”

Ramesh confessed, “His recommendation helped the song immensely. It helped people to explain what we were trying to convey.”
