Rain eases, but swollen rivers keep Malappuram on alert

Major rivers in the district, including the Kadalundipuzha, the Chaliyar and the Bharathapuzha, remained swollen on Sunday (August 2, 2026) after two days of heavy rain. The rain stayed away during the day, with sunny spells providing temporary relief. But but showers resumed in the evening.

The authorities kept 129 persons from 39 families in seven relief camps across Eranad, Kondotty and Nilambur taluks. The evacuees include 42 men, 51 women, and 36 children.

The Bakkikkayam regulator on the Kadalundipuzha remained above the warning level, prompting alerts at Vengara, Thennala, Ozhur, Oorakam, Parappur, Edarikode, Kannamangalam, A.R. Nagar, Othukkungal, Perumanna Klari, Tirurangadi and Kottakkal municipality.

Warnings were also issued for Angadippuram, Puzhakkattiri, Makkaraparamba, Kuruva and Koottilangadi after the Cherupuzha overflowed. Evacuations continued in flood- and landslide-prone areas based on vulnerability lists prepared by local bodies. The district administration warned of more rain over the next three days.

The recent rain caused flooding, landslips, and traffic disruption across the district. A compound wall of an anganwadi at Madarakundu, Kavanur, collapsed, damaging a nearby house. Landslides were reported from Kannamangalam and other areas, while a house under construction at Anchachavidi, Kalikavu, collapsed.

Overflowing streams flooded houses at Edavanna, forcing residents to move to safer places. Flooding disrupted traffic on the Pulikkal-Anthiyurkunnu road and caused congestion on the Kozhikode-Palakkad highway.

Sea erosion continued along the coast at Ponnani, Veliyankode, Perumpadappu and Parappanangadi. More than 100 houses were flooded in the Ponnani area, and several sustained partial damage. The authorities advised people to avoid travel to hilly areas.

District Collector Vinod Goyal has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Monday (August 3, 2026) due to continuing heavy rain in the district. The holiday applies to madrasas, tuition centres and anganwadis as well. However, pre-scheduled university and PSC examinations will be conducted as planned.
