Rahul Gandhi calls former MLA Rahul Bondre, urges him not to join BJP

Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi called former Congress MLA Rahul Bondre and prevented him from switching parties. Former MLA of Chikhli Assembly seat in Buldhana district was likely to join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Don’t come under psychological pressure; you are a loyal Congressman, don’t fall prey to it. They want to finish the competition and increase their influence. Without losing, you can’t win; losing is the foundation of victory,” said Mr. Gandhi on a conference call with Mr. Bondre, persuading him not to switch. Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal got Rahul Gandhi on phone to speak to Rahul Bondre, urging him to stay with Congress.

The conversation between both came to light on Monday night, a day after Mr Bondre revealed his intention to join the BJP. In a video statement, he said, “I have put all my political years with Congress, and I am grateful for that. In this journey, everyone has helped and guided me. However, I have decided to join BJP. Even if I am changing my direction, my respect for everyone from Congress will be same.”

Mr Bondre was all set to join the BJP; a grand reception was planned in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. However, Rahul Gandhi’s call has prevented the joining. Mr. Bondre has his base in the Chikhli constituency, where he served two terms as MLA, having strong influence in the region. The present MLA of Chikhli is BJP leader Shweta Mahale. 

In response to Mr. Gandhi, Mr. Bondre assured him to put his full weight and work for Congress. Calling Mr. Gandhi brother, he said, “So far, I have stayed with Congress for you. You calling me has given me the courage to fight again. I have lost a lot; even if I lose everything, I will stand by you in this fight.” 

Mr. Gandhi concluded the called by saying him “love you and not to worry”.
