Minor girl, her friend harassed in Bihar’s Jamui; culprits in police custody, political slugfest ensues

In an undated video that has gone viral on social media on Monday (September 21, 2026), a minor girl and her male friend were seen being harassed and molested by a group of men in Bihar’s Jamui district.

Police said an FIR has been lodged in the case, and 6-7 people who were seen in the video have been taken into custody, while two others have been arrested.

The incident is said to have happened on the evening of Saturday (September 19, 2026) on the Jamui-Lakhisarai road, which falls under Jamui Police Station.

Political back-and-forth ensues

Meanwhile, the Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal along with the ruling BJP and JD(U) leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the State traded barbs at each other following the vide going viral.

“There was no formal complaint registered against anyone in the incident. The police took suo motu cognisance of the incident and approached the victim and her friend. Both were returning from a hillside area after their coaching class was over, when on Jamui-Lakhisarai road, a group of 6-7 people with some wearing masks stopped them as it is shown in the viral video and they were [then] harassed,” said Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajit Dayal.

“An FIR was lodged over the incident on September 20 and while all the persons shown in the viral video have been taken into custody, a few of them have not been arrested. The police will soon arrest all of those found involved in this unfortunate incident,” Mr. Dayal further said.

The Bihar State Commission for Women took suo motu cognisance of the incident and said “stern action will be taken against all those found involved into the incident”. “I have spoken to the Jamui officials and they given details about the incident as it happened on September 19 at 7 p.m. Stern action will be taken against all those found involved in this incident. The Bihar State Commission for Women stands with all such hapless women,” said chairperson of the Commission Apsara .

Blot on the government: RJD

Meanwhile, a political slugfest over the incident has broken out. RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav alleged: “The law and order situation has completely collapsed in the State but the government keeps beating the drum that women in Bihar today can safely travel even at midnight. What has happened in Jamui is a blot on the government and we hope that police will take action in this incident soon”.

However, ruling JD(U) leader and Bihar Minister for Rural Works Department Sunil Kumar said that he too has spoken to the Jamui Superintendent of Police and got all the details about the incident. “All those people allegedly involved into the incident have been taken into custody, two of them even have been arrested by the police and very soon all of them would be behind bars…the Jamui incident was raked up at the government level,” said Mr. Kumar who also has, earlier, been a senior police official in the State.

State BJP spokesperson Kuntal Kumar said, “Very soon all those found involved in the incident will be sent to jail and speedy trial will be conducted against them. Nobody will be spared and the local police is working in the case on a serious note”.
