Melbourne Renegades target Jonny Bairstow for BBL 2026-27 season

Melbourne Renegades have expressed interest in signing Jonny Bairstow for the BBL 2026-27 season. The England wicketkeeper-batter has been identified as a potential overseas recruit as the franchise begins planning for the next edition of the Big Bash League.

Bairstow has not represented England since 2024. His final Test appearance came on March 7 2024, against India, while his last T20 International was on June 27 2024, also against India. Since stepping away from international duty, he has remained active in franchise cricket across multiple competitions.

According to 7Cricket, Bairstow is among the names the Renegades are considering as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. The interest comes at a time when the franchise faces uncertainty over one of their key players from the previous season. 

Why are Renegades interested in Bairstow?

The Renegades are in the market for a dependable wicketkeeper-batter, and Bairstow fits that requirement closely. His experience opening the batting combined with his keeping ability makes him a practical overseas option for a franchise with a specific positional need to address.

Tim Seifert was the Renegades’ leading run scorer in the 2024-25 BBL season, accumulating 200 runs across the campaign. Reports suggest the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter could move to Adelaide Strikers ahead of the season, though that transfer has not been officially confirmed. Should Seifert depart, the vacancy at the top of the order behind the stumps would become a clear priority for the club, and Bairstow’s profile directly addresses that gap.

It is important to note that no formal offer or contract between the Renegades and Bairstow has been confirmed at this stage. The interest remains at the reported level, and Bairstow’s own availability and willingness to join the franchise have also not been publicly established.
