Koffee With Karan 9: Vijay Deverakonda on how Rashmika Mandanna changed his perspective on love: “I was like, I need her”

Reflecting on his earlier views on love, Vijay said, “If you look back at my interviews, then I talk about love very almost with a sense of disrespect and disbelief, like I don’t believe in this concept, which was immature of me because I’ve been blessed with so much beautiful love. I’m lucky that way. And also I was very clouded by my ambition. For many years, for me, if anything was not serving the purpose of career and money and growth, felt like you’re distracting me from my purpose. I need to cut it off. At some point, by then I was very fond of her. Fondness turned into a sort of dependency. I was like, I need her. I need her around me because my day needs better, my meals feel better when we are sharing them. I sleep incredibly well when she’s with me. So I was like, I just need you. And then I realized that I want to be married to this woman.”

Vijay also explained that he approached the decision to get married after considering how their relationship would withstand different circumstances. According to the actor, he wanted to understand whether their commitment would remain strong through emotional highs and lows, as well as changes in their professional lives.

He further explained, “I think marriage is a really important decision. I’m a person who, like, I know that I put the relationship through every obstacle there is to see it survive. I’m that kind of guy. I was testing myself. I was testing the relationship. And when she asked me, ‘Let’s get married,’ for me, I was like, it cannot be an emotionally… like I’m suddenly feeling a surge of love for you, so I want to be married to you. For me it was like, let’s see if we feel this continuously. Continuously through days where you’re so happy, like now, through days where you’re upset, through days where you feel like I want to give my career everything, through days where you feel like I can’t deal with this acting, I want to quit and I want to be at home. We have all those days in our life where we are having these ups and downs emotionally. I was like through all of it, if still marriage feels so important, then we should do it.”

His comments offered a glimpse into how his understanding of love shifted from prioritising career growth above everything else to recognising the value of companionship. Vijay’s reflections also highlighted his approach to marriage as a long-term commitment that needed to withstand different phases of life, rather than a decision based solely on a moment of emotion.

Vijay and Rashmika’s relationship continues to draw public interest, with their personal milestones and appearances together prompting conversations among fans. Through his candid remarks on Koffee With Karan 9, Vijay shared how everyday moments with Rashmika played a role in his realisation that he wanted to build a life with her.
