India, Iran discuss economic cooperation as FM Sitharaman meets Iranian finance minister

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman thanks Iran for active participation in brics Summit and productive engagement in Finance Track deliberations

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Iran’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, Dr Seyed Ali Madanizadeh, in New Delhi on Sunday, with the two sides holding discussions on economic cooperation and areas of mutual interest.

During the meeting, Sitharaman thanked Iran for its active participation in the Brics Summit and acknowledged its productive engagement in deliberations under the Finance Track. The discussions provided an opportunity for both countries to exchange views on strengthening economic ties and exploring areas of shared interest.

The meeting comes amid increasing engagement between India and Iran through multilateral platforms, including Brics. Iran became a full member of the grouping in 2024, joining other emerging economies in efforts to expand cooperation across economic, financial and developmental areas.

The Finance Track remains an important component of Brics cooperation, bringing together finance ministers and central bank officials to discuss issues related to global economic governance, financial cooperation, development financing and other economic priorities.

India has been advocating greater cooperation among developing and emerging economies, particularly on strengthening financial resilience and increasing the voice of the Global South in international economic institutions.

The discussions between Sitharaman and Madanizadeh also assume significance as India and Iran continue to explore avenues for expanding bilateral economic engagement. Both sides have maintained dialogue on trade, connectivity and other areas of mutual economic interest.
