Henriques’ Portugal qualify for T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2027
Portugal secured their place in the 2027 Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier by defeating Spain by 57 runs in the Sub-Regional Qualifier C final at the National Cricket Field of Kerava, Finland, on August 21. Portugal posted 160/6 and then bowled Spain out for 103 to wrap up a commanding victory and bring the tournament to a fitting close.
Spain captain Christian Munoz-Mills won the toss and chose to field, but his bowlers could not contain Portugal’s batsmen across the innings. The result capped an unbeaten campaign for Portugal, who had won all four of their group-stage matches before lifting the title.
Spain had also gone through the group stage without a defeat, setting up a final between two sides in excellent form. The tournament was hosted by Finland and ran from August 14 to August 21,, with Portugal emerging as the standout team throughout the week.
How did Portugal build their total of 160/6?
Christopher De Freitas led the batting effort with 39 runs at the top of the order, giving Portugal a solid platform. Dhavalkumar Norotam contributed 23, while captain Moises Henriques, who previously represented Australia at international level, added 18 in the middle order. Craig Cachopa provided the acceleration Portugal needed, striking 25 off 21 balls, and Carlos Nunes hit a brisk 15 off just 9 deliveries. Jeremy Martins rounded off the innings with an unbeaten 18 off 8 balls, helping Portugal reach a competitive 160/6.
Spain’s most effective bowlers were Lorne Burns and Yasir Ali, who finished with 2/29 and 2/24 respectively. The rest of the Spain attack, however, could not stem the flow of runs in the closing overs as Portugal’s lower order took full advantage.
How did Portugal’s bowlers restrict Spain to 103?
Portugal’s bowling unit was disciplined from the outset. Sebastian de Oliviera struck early to put Spain under immediate pressure, and Siraj Ullah Khadem followed up with figures of 2/19. Edward Fleming was the most penetrating of the Portugal bowlers, returning 3/13 to dismantle Spain’s middle order. Jeremy Martins completed a fine all-round display by dismissing Lorne Burns with the ball, ensuring Spain never threatened the target.
Portugal’s victory in Sub-Regional Qualifier C means they join Jersey and Denmark in the 2027 Europe Qualifier. Jersey claimed the Sub-Regional Qualifier A title in Cyprus, while Denmark won Sub-Regional Qualifier B on home soil. Scotland will enter the Europe Qualifier directly, a decision taken in recognition of exceptional circumstances linked to their involvement in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. Italy and the Netherlands, meanwhile, advance directly to the Global Qualifier.
