GV Prakash Kumar says Ramayana’s Raavan composition has “a certain scale” and “intensity”

National Award-winning singer, composer and actor GV Prakash Kumar has opened up about lending his voice to Yash’s character Raavan in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. In an exclusive statement, the musician spoke about how he came on board, the scale of the composition and his experience of recording a song for the mythological epic. “To be a part of a film like Ramayana, which brings this timeless epic to the big screen on such an extraordinary scale, is an absolute privilege. My journey with the film began quite unexpectedly. I had just returned from Ayodhya after the promotions of Nayyi Naveli when I received a call from A. R. Rahman sir, asking me to sing the song for Yash’s Raavan,” he said.

Prakash Kumar also spoke about the complexity of Raavan and the challenge of translating the character’s personality into a musical performance.

“Dussehra is a time when we celebrate the triumph of good over evil, but the story of Ramayana also reminds us that its characters are far more layered than a single interpretation. Raavan, in particular, is one of the most fascinating characters in our mythology, immensely powerful, exceptionally knowledgeable,” he said.

According to the singer, the composition required an approach that went beyond simply performing the song.

“Raavan is a character of extraordinary complexity, power, intelligence and intensity, and I believe the music has to capture something far beyond what words alone can express. There is a certain scale, and an almost elemental energy to this composition that makes it unlike anything I have sung before,” he said.

Praising Rahman’s work on the project, Prakash Kumar added, “With Rahman sir’s extraordinary musical vision, the soundscape of Ramayana is being imagined on a truly magnificent canvas. As a singer, the challenge is not merely to sing the notes, but to become a part of that world and contribute something that makes the character feel larger than life.”

The musician also expressed his excitement about the film and its ensemble cast, which includes Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash in key roles.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have received this opportunity from Nitesh Tiwari sir’s Ramayana, with Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash and such an exceptional ensemble bringing this epic to life,” he said.

Prakash Kumar particularly hopes audiences experience the song on the big screen.

“I am particularly excited for audiences to experience this song on the big screen. There is a scale, a sound and an intensity to it that deserves that cinematic setting,” he added.

He concluded by asking listeners to approach the song without expectations and experience it in the context of Raavan’s character.

“I would love for listeners to discover the song without any preconceived notions and let the music take them into Raavan’s world. This Dussehra, as we celebrate the eternal significance of the Ramayana, I feel honoured to have contributed my voice to a cinematic journey that promises to be truly memorable,” he said.
