Ganguly on death threats: Police investigating

Sourav Ganguly and his wife Dona have been receiving anonymous letters for the past six months, with the latest correspondence containing explicit threats to their lives. The threatening letters arrived at both his residence and office in Kolkata, prompting Ganguly to lodge a formal complaint with the authorities.

Earlier anonymous letters had contained offensive language, but the most recent correspondence escalated to direct threats against Sourav and Dona, as well as threats to harm people close to the family.

On Monday, August 10, Ganguly’s personal secretary Tania Bhattacharya approached Thakurpukur police station in south Kolkata to file a written complaint. The complaint detailed the threatening nature of the latest letter received at Ganguly’s office. Police confirmed they are treating the matter with urgency and have begun a formal investigation into the source and delivery method of the correspondence.

“We have reported it to the police. I am sure the police will sort it out. The number is from here, Kolkata. Hopefully, the police will do the needful. I have security,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports.

How police are investigating the threatening letters

Preliminary findings suggest the letters may have originated through a courier service, with investigators attempting to locate a specific mobile number connected to the case. The family has identified a potential suspect based on a name associated with the number on the Truecaller app, though police continue their formal investigation.

“We have spoken to people from the courier service and tracked down one mobile number. We are trying to locate it,” the police officer said.

Police examined the movement of the SIM card allegedly used by the sender and contacted the courier agency concerned to gather details of the consignments. Ganguly, who serves as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, has indicated he has security measures in place while authorities work to resolve the matter.
