EXCLUSIVE: Abhinay Deo reveals he speaks to Aamir Khan almost every month about Delhi Belly 2; opens up on possible studio hurdle: “They may ask me to remove abuses; yeh ek hi aisi film hai jo kabhi clean NAHIN ho sakti!”
Over the weekend, Imran Khan was back in the news after he was detained by the Mumbai Police for attempting to participate in a protest demanding the removal of India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. Imran uploaded a picture of himself in a police van on Instagram, which quickly went viral. It also brought renewed attention to some of his popular films and songs. One track that was widely revisited over the weekend was ‘Bhaag DK Bose’ from his 2011 cult classic, Delhi Belly. The film continues to enjoy a loyal following, thanks to its memorable songs, performances, sharp writing and, importantly, its unabashed use of abusive language, which was quite rare in mainstream Hindi cinema at the time.
Bollywood Hungama recently spoke exclusively to Delhi Belly director Abhinay Deo as part of the promotions of his upcoming film, Doosra. When asked about the tremendous demand for Delhi Belly 2, he confessed, “Every week, I come up with one idea for the sequel. But there are some technical challenges. At that time, it was UTV who had made it. Now, Disney has acquired UTV. If Disney agrees to make Delhi Belly 2, they may tell me to remove the abuses and make it a clean entertainer. How can a film like Delhi Belly be clean? Yeh ek hi aisi film hai jo kabhi clean nahin ho sakti! The other challenge is that writer Akshat Verma took 9 years to write Delhi Belly. We don’t know how long he’ll take to write the sequel.”
Abhinay continued, “Nevertheless, we are trying. I speak to Aamir Khan (producer of Delhi Belly) almost every month, wherein I ask him, ‘Bhai saab, can we do Delhi Belly 2?’ (smiles). He would tell me, ‘Yaar tu Akshat ko pakad. Usko bol script finish karein’. I think Akshat is writing something. Let’s see.”
When asked if he was also in touch with Imran Khan, Abhinay Deo replied, “Yes, very much. He’s such a sweet fellow. I actually did speak to him about another film, completely different from Delhi Belly. However, he was busy shooting for Adhure Hum Adhure Tum and hence he couldn’t do it.”
