EXCLUSIVE: 15 years after Delhi Belly, Abhinay Deo could make HISTORY again with Doosra; may become the ONLY director in Indian cinema to have two films released WITHOUT interval
The trailer of Doosra was recently released and has caught attention due to its unusual storytelling. The film not only focuses on Sourav Ganguly’s glorious cricketing career, culminating in India’s historic victory over England in the 2002 NatWest Trophy final, but also parallelly follows the story of Tara (Plabita Borthakur), who lives in a deeply conservative household in Rajasthan. Interestingly, at a time when several films are more than three hours long, with some even stretching to three hours and 45 minutes, Doosra is an exception as it has a runtime of just 78 minutes. It is directed by Abhinay Deo whose 2011 cult film Delhi Belly was incidentally also released without an interval. It was an unusual move at the time and had caught a lot of attention. With Doosra being even shorter, can Abhinay repeat the feat and ensure another interval-free theatrical release?

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Abhinay Deo about Doosra. When asked whether the film could be released without an interval, he replied, “Ideally, there should not be an interval in this film. Abroad, they never have intervals. But in today’s times, most theatres insist on a break. In English films, they forcibly pause at the midpoint. Ultimately, theatres are not in the business of just showing films. They earn more from popcorn and cola than movie tickets! Sadly, that’s a different fight altogether.”
He continued, “As of now, I don’t know. It’s such a short film of 78 minutes. An interval in a film like Doosra will throw you off.”
Interestingly, if Abhinay Deo manages to convince exhibitors to screen Doosra without an interval, he would become the only director in the history of Indian cinema to have directed 2 films that released without an interval! When we pointed this out to him, Abhinay laughed and admitted, “That is true.”
Doosra releases in cinemas on October 23.
