Dinesh Karthik questions Tilak’s promotion in India’s record chase
India registered their highest successful run-chase in T20 International cricket on October 22, 2026, when they chased down a target of 226 runs in 19.4 overs with four wickets remaining in the opening T20I against New Zealand at Christchurch. The chase showcased aggressive batting from the opening pair and lower-order contributions that powered the team to victory.
Dinesh Karthik, analysing the match, highlighted the clinical nature of India’s chase while raising questions about the team’s batting order decisions. Karthik noted that the openers set the tone by playing aggressively in the powerplay, and Shreyas Iyer played a key role through the middle overs.
Karthik, however, couldn’t figure out why Tilak Varma was promoted to No. 3 ahead of the in-form Ishan Kishan, who is the top-ranked batter in the format. The promotion didn’t pay dividends as Tilak was dismissed for six runs off just 11 balls. Kishan, who batted at No. 5, could only manage one run in three balls.
The former India wicketkeeper opined that maybe the team management wanted to give Tilak some time in the middle. He also mentioned that Kishan was off the field for some time in the first innings and maybe that is why he wasn’t allowed to walk out to bat at the fall of the first wicket.
“I thought it was a very clinical chase, the openers set the tone. Both of them went gung-ho in the powerplay. Through the middle, it was Shreyas Iyer. It’s questionable why they sent Tilak Varma ahead of Ishan Kishan, there must be a reason for it, probably giving him an opportunity to bat or the fact that Ishan Kishan was out of the field and could not bat at No.3. Whatever, we have to wait for that,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
How did Naman Dhir accelerate India’s chase?
Karthik highlighted how Naman Dhir paced the innings effectively during the back end of the chase. The young batter’s ability to score quickly from the outset proved crucial in maintaining the required run rate.
“After that, what you saw was a Naman Dhir show in terms of how to pace an innings. He did not take too much time. Right from the get-go, he got some good boundaries,” Karthik said.
What role did batting depth play in the victory?
Karthik emphasised the importance of India’s batting depth, particularly the presence of Nitish Kumar Reddy at number eight. The availability of a capable batter in the lower order provided confidence that the chase was within reach, contrasting with scenarios where a bowler would be forced to bat in the closing stages.
“The depth in batting at No.8, when you have a batter, somebody like a Nitish Kumar Reddy, walks into this situation, you feel that the game is pretty much done and dusted. If you didn’t have that, if you had an Arshdeep Singh coming in, you would feel slightly differently, and the pressure would be on the batter in the crease to make sure he harbors the strike, and a lot of the dynamics would change. So, if you put everything into context, I think it was a good chase,” he added.
Karthik gave full marks to Naman Dhir for his match-winning knock of 42* in 15 balls. The cricketer-turned-commentator hailed Dhir’s ability to hit the big shots from ball one.
“For today, I think it is a 10 out of 10. The shots that he was able to play, the way he hit through covers, the late cut that he played towards the end. What he is doing is, even if there is a set batter, he is able to start very quickly, and that is so important, at the back end of the innings,” Karthik added.
