Charlie Dean to captain England Women in Ireland ODI series
England Women have selected a 15-player squad for a three-match ODI assignment against Ireland in September 2026, with Charlie Dean confirmed as captain. The fixtures are scheduled for September 1 at Leicester, September 3 at Derby and September 6 at Worcester.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are both managing their fitness and recovery and will not be available for the series. Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Amy Jones have also been left out of the selection. Dean takes the captaincy having already led England through the ODI series against New Zealand in May 2026, when Sciver-Brunt was sidelined with a calf injury.
The squad features two players yet to represent England at international level, Grace Potts and Kira Chathli. Charis Pavely, who has appeared in two T20 Internationals, is set to feature in the 50-over format for the first time if selected. Ryana MacDonald-Gay has returned after recovering from a lower-back problem, and Tilly Corteen-Coleman, who earned her two ODI caps against New Zealand, is also included.
Who will keep wicket for England with Amy Jones not selected?
Jones’ absence leaves England without their established first-choice wicketkeeper. Alice Capsey, who filled the reserve keeping role for England at the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, is expected to take on wicketkeeping duties across the series. Capsey also offers value as an attacking batter in the top order, giving England flexibility in how they construct their XI. England reached the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2026, and head coach Charlotte Edwards acknowledged the shift in focus this series represents.
“The focus has rightly been on T20 cricket for much of this year, but with a memorable run to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final now behind us, this is a chance for players to display their 50-over skills and bank some valuable experience for the future,” said Edwards as quoted by Cricbuzz.
What opportunity does this series offer players on the fringes of the England setup?
With several senior players unavailable or rested, the Ireland series opens a clear pathway for those seeking to strengthen their case for future selection. Corteen-Coleman, Pavely, Potts and Chathli will each be looking to make an impression across the three fixtures in the 50-over format.
“We have got plenty of exciting and talented cricketers in our game and this is an opportunity for some of them to push themselves further forward by hopefully contributing to England victories and putting pressure on future selection,” said Edwards.
