Beau Webster ready to adapt for Australia’s South Africa Test series

Australia are heading into the first Test against South Africa in Durban on October 9, 2026 with significant injury concerns after Cameron Green sustained an abdominal injury during the final ODI at Potchefstroom on September 30, 2026. Green was struck by a full toss from Corbin Bosch during that match and is now in doubt for the opening Test, though there is reasonable confidence he will recover in time.

Even if Green is passed fit to bat in Durban, there may be question marks over his role with the ball. Green had been the leading run-scorer in Australia’s series against Bangladesh in August 2026, making his availability all the more important to the touring side. Cooper Connolly remains the spare batter in Australia’s original squad for the tour.

With the injury cloud looming over Green’s fitness, Beau Webster‘s role with the side becomes more vital, as the sole all-rounder in the side. Webster, who made his Test debut at age 31 against India at the SCG in early 2025, has spoken openly about his mindset heading into the South Africa series. Webster has never played cricket in South Africa before, with his only previous experience of the continent being a T10 league in Zimbabwe.

“We obviously want Cameron out at 100% capacity, he’s fantastic and coming off a great series up in Darwin and Mackay, so hopefully he’s here with all guns blazing,” Webster said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

What has Webster said about his readiness for South Africa?

Webster passed fifty five times in his first 13 Test innings, a record that includes a debut half-century on a difficult SCG surface against India, a score of 72 in the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s in 2025, and back-to-back fifties in ball-dominated Tests against West Indies.

“I pride myself on a bit of problem-solving, I suppose, and being able to adapt. It does feel like I’ve played on some pretty tough wickets. I don’t know what we’re going to get over here. It would be nice to get some flat batting wickets, no doubt, but also you want a good contest from bat and ball,” Webster said.

How has Webster responded to his lean run against Bangladesh?

Webster’s form dipped during the Bangladesh series in August 2026, where he scored 12, 5 and 0 across his three innings and sent down 15.2 wicketless overs. He acknowledged the disappointment but was measured in his assessment of that run.

“Obviously I would have liked some runs up there, no doubt, as anybody would have,” Webster said. “When you play for Australia, you want to contribute and get big scores, and it wasn’t to be for me. I had three hits and three failures, so that’s the way the game goes. I’m just trying to get myself ready, and get myself at a point ready to go when we turn up to Durban in that first Test. Whether or not I play, it’s not up to me, but I’m doing everything I can to be ready and make sure I can contribute,” Webster said.

Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis also has been officially ruled out of the Durban Test with a fractured finger, and Matt Renshaw also suffered an injury during the third ODI at Potchefstroom on September 30, 2026. In response to the mounting injury list, Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper were called up to Australia‘s Test squad in South Africa as replacements.
