Amazon India Expands Operations on Western Dedicated Freight Corridor

Amazon India has broadened its logistics footprint along the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor through a partnership with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways. The initiative officially began following the flagging off of a cargo train from New Dadri Railway Station on Tuesday.

What Happened

Through this launch, Amazon India has become the inaugural e-commerce entity to utilize the Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) train running on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). The daily freight service links the company’s northern and western networks using more than 10 Van Parcels (VPs) along the route, shifting cargo volume from road-based surface transport to rail networks.

Key Highlights

  • Pioneering E-Commerce Service: Amazon India is the first e-commerce business to operate on the inaugural JPP-RCS train along the WDFC.
  • Network Coverage: The daily service connects key locations including Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Surat, offering onward transit links to Pune, Mumbai, and Goa.
  • Capacity and Speed: According to railway officials, the freight service can transport 350 to 400 tonnes within 24 hours, facilitating overnight transit so goods arrive the following day.
  • Corridor Dimensions: The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor covers approximately 1,504 kilometres, stretching from New Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) near Mumbai.
  • Network Growth Since 2019: Starting from a single train partnership with Indian Railways in 2019, Amazon India’s rail operations have grown to over 140 trains servicing 130 intercity routes across more than 100 cities.

Why This Matters

The Dedicated Freight Corridors are engineered to decongest conventional rail routes, accelerate freight train travel speeds, accommodate heavy-haul trains, and connect vital ports and industrial centers to lower overall logistics expenditures. Shifting freight to the dedicated corridor supports Amazon’s multimodal transport strategy ahead of the festive season while delivering a more economical and sustainable freight option. Manoj Singh, Member (Operations and Business Development) of the Railway Board, noted that the corridor provides an efficient solution that also allows smaller businesses to benefit from the rail infrastructure.

What to Watch Next

Amazon India intends to deepen its operational alignment with Indian Railways and the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL) as it seeks to scale rail logistics efficiency and meet customer fulfillment demands across the country.
