Abishek Porel opens up after Bengal century, reveals struggles

Abishek Porel scored 114 off 137 balls with 11 boundaries and one six on Day 2 of Bengal’s Elite Group C encounter at Bengal Cricket Academy Ground in Kalyani. The 23-year-old batter reached the three-figure mark after a gap of over three months away from competitive cricket, having missed the recently concluded Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup tournaments. This was his second century in first-class cricket and his first of the 2026-27 domestic season.

Porel batted in the number five position and shared a 199-run partnership with Sudip Kumar Gharami, who also scored a century. The batter had only one first-class century across the previous two years, a fact that weighed on his mind as he built his innings. Gharami’s steady presence at the crease proved instrumental in Porel’s return to form after months away from the game.

“I only had one first-class hundred in the last two years, so that was playing on my mind, that getting a hundred would be a release. I was a bit restless,” Porel was quoted as saying by Money Control.

Gharami’s partnership and steady support

Porel dropped to his knees after reaching the three-figure mark before regaining his composure, raising his bat and acknowledging the applause from his teammates and the dressing room. He pointed his bat towards the stands in celebration before his emotions overwhelmed him. The moment captured the weight of circumstances surrounding his return to domestic cricket.

Gharami’s role in steadying Porel during the partnership cannot be overstated. The opening batter’s encouragement and his own century provided crucial support as Porel navigated the mental challenges of his comeback. Gharami repeatedly offered reassurance during the innings, reminding Porel to remain patient and trust his technique.

“Gharami kept coming over and telling me to just have patience… that it will come. The way I scored 99 runs, the single run will come the exact same way. He helped me a lot. The outstanding batting he did was worth watching,” Porel added.

Porel’s absence from competitive cricket had extended beyond the Ranji Trophy. He had not played since the IPL 2026 concluded in June, making his return to domestic cricket a significant step. The gap had allowed time for reflection, but it also meant rebuilding confidence and form at the highest level.

“For the last two years, I wasn’t getting performances like that in the Ranji Trophy. There were ups and downs, injuries, and many incidents happened in my personal life. I didn’t want to cry [during the celebration], it came automatically,” Porel said.

The weight of two difficult years

Porel’s celebration carried a deeper message beyond the immediate joy of reaching a century. His gesture and emotional response signalled his determination to let his cricket do the talking rather than engage in external commentary. The batter was resolute in his commitment to rebuild his reputation through performance.

“But my celebration was a statement that I don’t want to say anything, I just want to play cricket, I want to answer everyone through cricket. I have seen how to survive in a different world, a different universe. I have taken a lot of positive things from there, which has made me mentally tougher,” Porel said.

The support system around Porel during his difficult phase proved invaluable. Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla, along with Sanjay and Joydeep, worked intensively to prepare him for his return to competitive cricket. In the ten days leading up to the match, the coaching staff made extraordinary efforts to rebuild his confidence and technical readiness.

“I will remain forever grateful in my life for how Laxmi-da helped me and brought me out of that phase. He supported me all the time. Sanjay sir, Joydeep sir, everyone together got me out of that phase. The way they got me ready in 10 days… on off-days when there was no practice, Joydeep sir and Laxmi-da came to Jadavpur and made me bat for three hours. Leaving everything behind, I have started a new life through their hands,” Porel concluded.
