Akka director Dharamaraj Shetty reveals Keerthy Suresh came up with her signature hairpin killing style: “A brilliant idea that all came from her”
Keerthy Suresh has earned appreciation for her portrayal of Bhavani in Akka, with her performance bringing together fierce action, emotional vulnerability and commanding screen presence. The National Award-winning actress has particularly drawn attention for the way she balances the contrasting shades of her character. Now, director Dharamaraj Shetty has opened up about Keerthy’s performance, revealing how the actress brought her own ideas to the action sequences, including Bhavani’s distinctive hairpin killing style.

In a conversation about the series, Shetty explained that casting the character of Bhavani required an actor who could convincingly portray two contrasting personalities. As a queen and a gangster, Bhavani has both a gentle, forgiving side and a harsher, more aggressive streak. According to the director, Keerthy managed to bring both dimensions to life without compromising the credibility of either.
Speaking about her portrayal, Dharamaraj Shetty said, “Any actor playing Bhavani’s character needed to embody the duality in the character of being a queen and a gangster, a character with a gentle, forgiving side and also a harsher, fierce side. And Keerthy Suresh played this perfectly. She is 100 percent believable when she plays the soft side and equally convincing when she is kicking ass.”
The director also highlighted that while Keerthy’s acting abilities were never in question, watching her perform the action sequences was an equally rewarding experience. He particularly appreciated the combination of grace and fierceness she brought to the physical portions, adding that several elements of her personality found their way into the character’s action style.
He further added, “There was no doubt about Keerthy’s acting skills, but what was exciting to see was her performing all the action. The grace and the fierceness with which she did them was fun to witness. She brought in so much of her personality to the action. For example, her signature style of killing her enemies with her hairpin was a brilliant idea that all came from her.”
With Akka, Keerthy Suresh continues to explore roles that allow her to move beyond conventional character portrayals. The actress has several projects lined up, including Sathyavan Savithri, Rowdy Janardhana, Raftaar and January 12 Vidudala. The upcoming slate will see her take on different characters and further showcase her versatility across projects.
