Kon Honar Crorepati: Sachin Pilgaonkar reveals Madhuri Dixit’s Abodh performance prompted him to cast her as an inspector in Prem Deewane: “If she can do that, she can pull this off too”
Madhuri Dixit recently revisited her experience of working with Sachin Pilgaonkar on Prem Deewane during an appearance on Sony Marathi’s Kon Honar Crorepati. The actor asked Pilgaonkar, who directed the film, what prompted him to cast her as an inspector at a time when she was largely known for dance and romantic roles.
During their conversation, Madhuri recalled her role in the 1992 film and asked Pilgaonkar about his decision to cast her in a character that was different from her then-established screen image.
“Sachin ji, we worked together in a film that you directed. It was called Prem Deewane. You cast me as an inspector, but until then, my image was mostly associated with dance and romance. What made you think of casting me in a role like that?” Madhuri asked.

In response, Sachin revealed that her performance in Abodh had convinced him that she could take on the role. “I had seen your film Abodh before that, and I absolutely loved your performance. I said, ‘No, I want Madhuri.’ When I was asked, ‘Why Madhuri for this role?’ I said, ‘If she can do that, she can pull this off too,’” he recalled.
Madhuri acknowledged Pilgaonkar’s faith in her and thanked him for allowing her to take on a different kind of character. “Thank you for showing so much confidence in me and giving me the opportunity to do something different,” she said.
Prem Deewane, released in 1992, featured Madhuri Dixit alongside Jackie Shroff and Vivek Mushran, with Sachin Pilgaonkar serving as the director. The conversation on Kon Honar Crorepati offered a glimpse into how Pilgaonkar’s earlier appreciation of Madhuri’s acting helped shape his casting decision.
