3D turns into a MONEY-MINTING MACHINE for Ramayana! Ranbir Kapoor-Yash epic rakes in a WHOPPING Rs. 115 cr. at the box office from 3D alone in 3 days
Ramayana – Part I, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, has collected approximately Rs. 176 crores nett at the Indian box office in its first three days. While the film’s massive collections have grabbed headlines, a closer examination of its format-wise business reveals a fascinating trend. Nearly two-thirds of the film’s entire domestic box office revenue has come from 3D screenings, underlining the enormous commercial importance of premium theatrical formats.

An analysis of the film’s detailed box office data for November 5, 6 and 7 reveals that all 3D formats collectively generated Rs. 115.46 crores nett, representing 65.62% of the film’s total collections of Rs. 175.94 crores. In comparison, non-3D formats contributed approximately Rs. 60.49 crores, accounting for the remaining 34.38%.
The biggest revelation is the extraordinary contribution of standard 3D screenings. The format has collected Rs. 98.55 crores nett in three days, accounting for 56.01% of the film’s nationwide business. In other words, more than half of every rupee earned by Ramayana at the Indian box office has come from regular 3D shows alone. Standard 2D occupies the second position with Rs. 59.96 crores nett, representing 34.08% of the total. Meanwhile, IMAX 3D has emerged as the third-biggest contributor, generating an impressive Rs. 12.54 crores nett. Other premium formats, including 4DX 3D, ScreenX 3D and Dolby Cinema 3D, have also contributed to the overall collections, although their individual shares remain relatively modest.
According to our detailed data, IMAX 3D screenings have sold approximately 1.22 lakh tickets, generating Rs. 12.54 crores nett. This translates into an average nett ticket realisation of approximately Rs. 1,025. In comparison, standard 3D screenings have generated approximately Rs. 328 nett per ticket, while standard 2D stands at around Rs. 242. This means that an IMAX 3D ticket has generated more than three times the average nett revenue of a standard 3D ticket and over four times that of a regular 2D ticket.
Standard 3D has sold approximately 30.04 lakh tickets, compared with 24.83 lakh for standard 2D. Thus, 3D’s dominance is not merely the result of higher ticket prices; regular 3D screenings have also attracted more admissions than their 2D counterparts. Nevertheless, the difference in average ticket realisation is significant.
