Trump tariffs news live: US says will still impose sanctions on Russia’s trading partners despite talks

Trump Tariff News Live: India won’t bow to Trump’s tariff threats, says ex-diplomat Trigunayat

Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on India over its continued oil imports from Russia, former diplomat Anil Trigunayat strongly defended India’s position. He questioned, “If you say that India should not buy oil from Russia, can you provide oil at the same price as Russia is doing to us? Should we not look after our own interests?” Emphasizing national interest over external pressure, he added, “We are not going to just give in to these kinds of arm-twisting tactics, whether by President Trump or anybody else.” Trigunayat further suggested that India may respond in kind, saying, “We would be reciprocating, in certain ways, on certain items.” While clarifying that he had no concrete evidence, he speculated that “the Americans, probably, or the Western countries, are not very happy about India’s autonomous rise as a major economic power,” and would attempt—unsuccessfully—to hinder its growth.
