Suchitwa Keralam rankings for local bodies in the State

The Kerala government is set to introduce ‘Suchitwa Keralam’ rankings to grade local self-government bodies based on their achievements in waste management and cleanliness standards. The local bodies will be ranked on nine major waste management factors and 22 indices in a process which will take place over four phases from this month onwards. The ranking process is expected to be completed by next month.

The final ranking will be determined by grading the local government bodies according to the evaluation factors, including coverage of door-step collection of non-biodegradable waste and collection of user fees, collection systems for all types of waste, setting up of material collection and resource recovery facilities, treatment of liquid sanitary waste, enforcement activities, awareness activities, implementation of projects, cleanliness of public places and green activities.

This is the first time that grading is being implemented for local government bodies on the basis of cleanliness. In the first phase, local bodies should upload information on the online platform in August. Data verification will be carried out as part of the second phase in September. Special assessment teams evaluate the claims through field visits. The third phase will be the district-level inspection. After that, the final ranking of the State-level committee will be published and awards will be given. Separate rank lists will be published for gram panchayats, municipalities and corporations.
