Rajkummar Rao recalls his basketball love story in Gurgaon; says, “I was Rahul and she was my Anjali from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”

Rajkummar Rao, known for his versatile performances on screen, recently opened up about an incident from his teenage years that still remains fresh in his memory. In a candid conversation with Filmfare, the actor reflected on his school days in Gurgaon, where his passion for martial arts and a filmy crush came together in a rather dramatic episode.

When asked about rumours of him being into Taekwondo and getting into a scuffle over a girl, Rao clarified the story. “Not exactly saved me but yes, my mother definitely put an end to the whole fiasco. I’m a trained martial artist, and while it wasn’t exactly 40 people, it was definitely a crowd. This was in Gurgaon. I had just joined a new school in Class 11,” he shared.

The story took a cinematic turn when he spotted a girl playing basketball. A self-confessed Shah Rukh Khan admirer, Rao instantly related it to the iconic Kuch Kuch Hota Hai moment. “There was this girl, and being a die-hard Shah Rukh sir fan, the moment I saw her playing basketball like Anjali from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I was like, that’s her, my Anjali! And of course, in my head. I was Rahul.”

Despite never having played basketball, he took a chance. Rajkummar recalled, “I went up to her and said, ‘Excuse me, can I play too?’ She said yes, and I somehow landed a three-pointer on my first try. She asked, “Do you play?” I said, “No, this is my first time.” She smiled, said “Wow. nice!” and that was it. I was in love. Because, obviously. Anjali had to be with Rahul.”

However, the girl already had a boyfriend, a senior who didn’t take kindly to Rao’s interest. “He found out, rounded up some of his friends, and caught me after school. They started beating me up. I still remember shouting, ‘Don’t hit me in the face, I want to be an actor!’” he said.

The situation could have escalated, but his mother stepped in. “When she heard about it, my mother took me straight to the boy’s house to sort out the matter and 30 minutes later, he was my friend. That’s just how she handled things,” Rao added with admiration.

The episode, though turbulent, highlights the innocence of young love and the actor’s unwavering dream of becoming an actor even during his teenage years.
