Kunal Kemmu scores triple SWA Awards Nominations for Madgaon Express; says, “First time my work Is acknowledged by writers”

More than a year after its theatrical release, Madgaon Express continues to ride the waves of love and laughter — this time with three major nominations at the upcoming 6th edition of the Screenwriters Association (SWA) Awards. Actor-filmmaker Kunal Kemmu, who made his directorial debut with the Excel Entertainment-produced buddy comedy, has earned nods in three prestigious categories: Best Story, Best Screenplay, and Best Dialogue.

Kunal, who not only directed but also wrote the film, is ecstatic over this unique recognition. In an emotional statement, the Go Goa Gone actor shared, “I am very happy and excited to be nominated in all three categories for my debut film. For all the love that Madgaon Express has received, this is the first time that a work of mine has been acknowledged by the writing community itself.”

Kunal, who previously co-wrote the dialogues for the cult hit Go Goa Gone, added, “Writing is a difficult, solitary process and such awards bring it in the spotlight. I am keeping my fingers crossed.” In the Best Story and Screenplay category, Kunal faces tough competition from some of the biggest names in the industry, including Imtiaz Ali for Amar Singh Chamkila, Atul Sabharwal for Berlin, Avinash Sampath for CTRL, and Karan Gour for Fairy Folk.

Meanwhile, in the Best Dialogue category, Kunal is nominated alongside Sumukhi Suresh (CTRL), Devang Tiwari and Amit Pradhan (Jo Tera Hai Woh Mera Hai), Karan Gour (Fairy Folk), and Niren Bhatt (Stree 2). The SWA Awards 2025, scheduled to be held on August 9, will honour the most compelling and innovative works of 2024 across film, television, and digital platforms — with a focus on celebrating the writers who shaped them.

The comedy, starring Divyenndu, Pratik Gandhi, and Avinash Tiwary, has been widely praised for its humour, character-driven narrative, and razor-sharp dialogues. Produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, Madgaon Express has now officially cemented its place as a standout writing achievement of 2024.

As the industry gears up for the event, all eyes are on Kunal Kemmu — the actor-turned-writer-director whose Madgaon Express might just steam ahead with top honours.
