KIA handled 21.9 million passengers in the first six month of 2025

The Kempegowda International Airport’s (KIA) which is the third busiest airport in the country handled a traffic of 21.9 million passengers in the first six months of 2025.

According to Fairfax India Holdings Corporation’s second quarter financial results, the airport handled domestic passenger traffic of 18.6 million and international passenger traffic of 3.3 million in the first six months of 2025 representing year over year growth of 7.9% and 30.9%, respectively.

“This growth has been supported by increased capacity from major domestic and international carriers, the launch of new routes, and the start of operations by new international airlines,” Fairfax India said in its 2025 Q2 Interim Report.

Fairfax India holds 74.0% equity interest in the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) which operates KIA.

The company added that cargo volumes at the airport also increased.

“Cargo volumes also grew 3.9% year over year, driven by continued growth in perishable exports, as well as heightened demand for international air cargo due to the current geopolitical landscape,” it added.

It further said that the commencement of domestic and international operations for the first phase of Terminal 2 during 2023 increased annual passenger capacity at the airport by approximately 25 million.

“During 2024, BIAL revised its airport infrastructure expansion plan pertaining to several projects to be undertaken between fiscal years 2025 and 2028, with a primary goal to enhance accessibility and optimise existing airport operations in preparation for anticipated growth in passenger and air traffic,” it said.

The expansion plans include new airport metro stations, upgrades to existing terminals, additional airplane taxiways, and new tunnels, connectors and walkways.

“BIAL’s plans to increase the overall capacity of the airport also remain underway, and include the construction of the second phase of Terminal 2 by fiscal year 2029 and a third terminal building by fiscal year 2034,” the report said.
