‘It’s doubtful’ – Jonny Bairstow doubts possibility of England comeback

Jonny Bairstow has recently admitted that he feels that an England comeback is doubtful considering the current scenario of the entire setup. The wicketkeeper-batter last represented England in June 2024 during the semi-final of the T20 World Cup.

When asked whether he carried aspirations of making a return to international cricket, Bairstow revealed that he had not heard from the selectors’ end in quite some time.

“Oh look, if that comes, that comes but I think it’s doubtful judging by the fact that I’ve not heard too much,” Bairstow shared in an interview conducted by BBC Sport after he had scored an unbeaten 86 off just 50 balls for Welsh Fire against London Spirit in the ongoing edition of The Hundred.

The last time Bairstow represented England was in March 2024 during the away Test series against India. Bairstow debuted for the national setup in 2011.

Bairstow was the poster boy of England’s Bazball regime in its early days. He played a critical part in England’s boost in run rate during their innings in Tests. However, Bairstow, who has played 100 Tests for England, has never been allotted a fixed role – be it in terms of his position in the batting order or with the gloves behind the stumps.

Speaking of Bairstow’s Indian Premier League career, he has represented three franchises (Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians) since his debut season in 2019. Bairstow possesses a strike rate of 146.07 and has scored a total of 1674 runs.
