Legendary Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has always been admired for his cricketing abilities and down-to-earth nature. Notably, he is the only captain to win all three ICC trophies. So when a clip of him smoking a hookah surfaced, it instantly grabbed attention. Fans, who are used to seeing him as the fitness-focused cricketer, were surprised. However, this wasn’t the first time such instances had come to being.

The first notable video of Dhoni smoking a hookah appeared at a social gathering, where he was caught on camera smoking a hookah. The incident spoken about took place during a New Year’s party in Dubai, with the likes of Rishabh Pant and Bollywood star Kriti Sanon also present in the same event.

Furthermore, another viral clip resurfaced in which Dhoni was spotted dancing to the popular Bollywood track “Jhak Maar Ke” from the film Desi Boyz. The video featured his wife, Sakshi Singh Dhoni, who was seen laughing, cheering, and enjoying the moment alongside him. However, a hookah setup was also visible. While Dhoni’s impromptu dance moves were all over the internet, the hookah’s presence in the frame didn’t go unnoticed and once again triggered debates.

Former Australian cricketer George Bailey, who shared dressing rooms with Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant, had revealed in an interview that the captain often used hookah as a way to bond with teammates. Bailey explained how Dhoni’s room would always have an open-door policy, with younger players often joining him late at night for informal chats. 

“He likes smoking a bit of the sheesha or the hookah. So, he quite often would set that up in his room, and it was very much open-door policy. You would go in and quite often find a lot of younger players there. For India or a lot of other cricket teams, it can be hierarchical, but he certainly broke that down,” Bailey, who played with Dhoni at CSK (2009-2012) and Rising Pune Supergiant (2016), You just find yourself in his room late at night chatting inevitably about the game or about different facets of the game or about different people and with different people it’s a great way to break down barriers,” he had said in a video posted by Cricket Australia.
