In yet another accident at the Muthalapozhi Harbour, a fishing boat that was returning to the harbour capsized owing to the strong waves at around 6.30 a.m. on Thursday (August 7, 2025).

According to the Anchuthengu Coastal police, the five fish workers in the boat were rescued by workers in the other boat as well as the coastal police personnel. Two persons hailing from Anchuthengu, who sustained injuries, were admitted to a private hospital in Perumathura.

The submerged sand bar at the estuary’s inlet has drastically reduced the depth of the harbour mouth, triggering strong conflicting currents and eddies powerful enough to draw boats into its vortex.

Over a 100 accidents in 5 years

More than a hundred accidents have happened at Muthalapozhi over the past few years, causing deaths and injuries.

The Fisheries department had initiated dredging activities to remove the sand bar.
