EXCLUSIVE: Lokah director Dominic Arun credits Dulquer Salmaan for the film’s vision and scale, “Without DQ, there is no Lokah”
As Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra continues to perform well both in India and overseas, director Dominic Arun has reflected on the creative and production journey behind the country’s first female-led superhero film. Produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, Lokah has stood out for its bold narrative, visual scale, and commitment to telling a woman-centric story with conviction.
In a recent interview, Arun acknowledged the pivotal role that Dulquer Salmaan and his production house played in bringing the vision of Lokah to life. “Without DQ and Wayfarer, there is no Lokah,” said Arun. “He was just as invested as we were in making this film what it is today.”
The director admitted he had initial concerns about the budget, especially considering it was a woman-led project — a rarity in the superhero genre. “I was worried the budget might become a point of resistance. It was on the higher side by industry standards,” Arun shared. “But DQ immediately understood the need for that budget and even encouraged us to scale up when the story required it.”
Arun pointed to one specific moment during production that highlighted Dulquer’s commitment to the film’s cinematic vision. “In my original draft, the opening war sequence was designed to be more suggestive — mostly a close-up of Chandra with the war depicted through sound. But DQ pushed us to visually show that world. He believed the audience needed to feel the scale right from the start. That input changed everything,” he said.
Now that the film is receiving a strong response from both critics and viewers, Arun feels validated in the choices they made. “Looking at the collections and audience reactions, I genuinely feel happy — because Dulquer truly deserves this success,” he added.
With its bold storytelling and cinematic ambition, Lokah has not only pushed genre boundaries but also spotlighted the power of collaboration in bringing a fresh kind of superhero story to the big screen.
