David Miller in South Africa’s plans for 2027 World Cup, confirms skipper Temba Bavuma
Experienced middle-order batter David Miller is considered to be still in the mix for making South Africa’s squad for the 50-over World Cup despite his absence from their squad for the upcoming series against England, as per skipper Temba Bavuma. Miller missed South Africa’s white-ball tour to Australia due to his franchise commitments with the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred Men’s 2025.
He will also not feature for the ODI series against England. However, Miller will return for the three 20-over matches which are slated to start on September 10, where the visitors will be led by star all-rounder Aiden Markram. Bavuma elaborated on Miller’s situation, considering The Hundred and his unavailability during those periods as the schedules clashed.
“What I understand is that those communications were done during his contract times, in terms of him being available during this period for The Hundred. Essentially, he wasn’t available for selection – but I stand by correction around that. David’s still within the mix in the ODI stuff, if that answers your question. The Australia tour would’ve coincided with the Hundred. I guess any international commitments that occurred during the Hundred, David wasn’t available for. Unfortunately, the one-day [series], it clashes: he wasn’t part of our build-up. But then with the T20 stuff, The Hundred is done, he’ll fall back into the team,” stated Bavuma ahead of the first match, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Miller will be aged 38 at the time during when the 2027 World Cup will be played. The left-handed batter averages 42.30 in the 178 matches he has played in the format. Miller strikes at 103.68 in 24 fifties and seven tons. His most recent outing in the 50-over format came during the Champions Trophy 2025 clash against New Zealand, where he scored a 67-ball hundred, although the Proteas lost the match and were eventually ruled out of the tournament.
Speaking of South Africa‘s squad, Matthew Breetzke and Kagiso Rabada will miss out the series-opening clash against England due to respective niggles. They will also be without Heinrich Klaasen, who hung up his boots from all forms of international cricket earlier in 2025. Bavuma, who is currently managing his workload following sustaining a hamstring injury at the World Test Championship final in June, may not play all three matches.
