After Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan files petition over misuse of his personality rights

Actor Abhishek Bachchan has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality rights, claiming that his name and image are being used online without permission. This development comes just a day after his wife, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, filed a similar plea with the court regarding the unauthorised use and AI-based tampering of her photos.

According to a report by Live Mint, Abhishek Bachchan filed a petition against a website named Bollywood Tee Shop, which sells T-shirts featuring images of Bollywood celebrities. In his plea, the actor stated that his likeness and persona were being used without his authorisation, raising concerns over potential misuse and fraud through fake online identities of public figures. Through his lawyer, Pravin Anand, the actor requested the court to issue injunctions against the website and similar entities. He also sought the removal of all related online links from platforms such as Google and YouTube. Additionally, he asked for the right to extend the order to “John Doe” defendants—unidentified parties who may engage in similar violations in the future.

The case reflects a growing concern in the entertainment industry over the misuse of celebrity identities, particularly with the rise of AI-generated content. Several Bollywood actors, including Abhishek Bachchan’s father Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff, have previously filed legal petitions in the Delhi High Court to protect their image, name, and voice from unauthorised use.

Ameet Nayak, a legal partner of Abhishek’s lawyer, commented on the evolving legal landscape, stating, “The law on personality rights has evolved over time, thanks to our judiciary giving recognition. We are fortunate to have been the first ones to get the order for Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, followed by Mr. Anil Kapoor, Mr. Jackie Shroff, and now for Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Such orders are necessary to prevent the misuse of celebrity attributes, particularly through AI and other digital tools.”

On Tuesday, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also approached the Delhi High Court, raising concerns over the unauthorised use of her name, photos, and public persona across various digital platforms and products. The court, presided over by Justice Tejas Karia, acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and indicated plans to issue injunctions to prevent such misuse. The matter has been scheduled for further hearings on January 15, 2026. This growing trend of celebrities seeking legal protection underscores the urgent need for clear regulations around digital identity rights in the era of AI and content manipulation.
