Rajinikanth breaks down recalling his days as a ‘coolie’; says, “My college friend mocked me for carrying luggage”
The trailer launch of Coolie, the much-anticipated film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring superstar Rajinikanth, turned into an unexpectedly emotional event as the legendary actor opened up about one of the most painful experiences from his youth. Recounting his real-life days as a coolie (manual laborer), Rajinikanth stunned fans with a rare, heartfelt story that revealed a vulnerable side of the screen icon.
Addressing a packed audience in Chennai, Rajinikanth said, “I got yelled at many times when I worked as a coolie. One day, a man asked me to carry luggage into his tempo and paid me just 2 rupees for it. His voice sounded strangely familiar, and to my shock, I realized he was my college mate — someone I had once mocked during our student days.”
The emotional weight of the encounter left a lasting mark on the actor. “That day, he ridiculed me and said, ‘How arrogant you were in those days,’ mocking my job and my condition. That was the first time I broke down crying in my life,” Rajinikanth shared, his voice tinged with emotion.
The revelation added a deeply personal layer to Coolie as fans eagerly await its release. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for his gritty storytelling and commercial success, the film promises to be a cinematic spectacle.
Speaking of his experience working with Kanagaraj, Rajinikanth had high praise: “The real hero of Coolie is none other than Lokesh Kanagaraj. One of the most successful commercial directors has teamed up with me, and his efforts in assembling such a phenomenal cast are commendable.”
The film boasts an enviable lineup including Telugu superstar Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and even Bollywood icon Aamir Khan in a special cameo. “Bringing together an amazing star cast, he has created a storm,” Rajini added with admiration.
As the trailer continues to trend online, Rajinikanth’s emotional revelations have resonated widely, making Coolie more than just another action entertainer — it’s now also a story of resilience, humility, and redemption. The film is slated for a grand theatrical release on August 14 in multiple languages.
