Director Ajay Bahl on 12 years of BA Pass, “We were so innocent while we were making the film”
Filmmaker Ajay Bahl’s BA Pass completed 12 years on August 2. The film was a bold drama starring Shadab Kamal and Shilpa Shukla. On the film’s anniversary, Bahl looked back at it in an interview with us.
Your BA Pass had created quite a stir on its release
All I can say in all honesty, it was just a labor of love and we were so innocent while we were making the film. We didn’t even know what the film industry was like, how to make a film for business, this and that. Now that we’ve seen it, we understand.
There was a starkness about the film
It was the purest film because it was made without any expectations. And without any preconceived notions of what is right or wrong. One gets hardened and cynical in the industry, the more you work and get more cynical by the day. But I wasn’t cynical at that point of time and I really believe, you know, the purity that I’m talking about also means that there were no restrictions since I was a producer and I was the director.
So you had creative freedom?
I could do what I wanted to do. But none of it would have been possible, you know, if Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Shadab Kamal and Shilpa Shukla were not there. And they really, really held my hand through the process. So, forever grateful.
