Shibu Soren death LIVE: Former Jharkhand CM passes away

Born on 11 January 1944, in United Bihar in Nemra village of today’s Ramgarh district of Jharkhand, Shibu Soren was the person who raised voice against the system of money lending, which was at its peak to such an extent that people used to get only one-third of their produce and the moneylenders would take away the rest.

He had his influence in neighbouring Odisha and West Bengal as well. He is also given credit for fighting for a separate state.

He formed the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1972, and at that time, Binod Bihari Mahto became the president of the party, and Shibu Soren was the general secretary. Later, after the death of Nirmal Mahto, who was serving as the party’s president in 1987, the command of JMM came into the hands of Shibu Soren.

Shibu Soren served at the party’s top post till April 2025, and due to deteriorating health, his son Hemant Soren was elected as JMM national president. The foundation of this party was laid in a rally held on February 4, 1972, at the Golf Ground in Dhanbad to take the movement for a separate Jharkhand state.
