Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte’s Akka continues to hold the No. 1 Spot on Netflix India’s Top 10

Netflix’s Akka has maintained its position at the top of Netflix India’s Top 10 list throughout the week, emerging as the most-watched title on the platform in the country. Created and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty and produced by YRF Entertainment, the gangster drama has found an audience with its distinct setting, complex characters and storyline centred on power, loyalty and legacy.

Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte’s Akka continues to hold the No. 1 Spot on Netflix India’s Top 10

Set in the fictional kingdom of Pernuru, where women have ruled and protected their territory for generations, Akka revolves around Bhavani, played by Keerthy Suresh. A queen who has transformed into a gangster, Bhavani finds her authority challenged when Rudra, portrayed by Radhika Apte, enters her world and questions the existing power structure.

Speaking about her role, Keerthy Suresh shared how playing Bhavani allowed her to explore a different side of her acting abilities. She said, “Akka introduced me to a side of myself as an actor that I hadn’t explored before. Bhavani is a woman who knows what she stands for and will go to great lengths to protect her legacy. What makes her interesting is that beneath her strength and authority are choices that are never easy, especially when the stakes are so high. It is so gratifying to see audiences on Netflix connect with Bhavani and the world of Akka, and I’m so happy that the show is being loved by viewers.”

Radhika Apte, who portrays Rudra, spoke about what made the series different from conventional gangster dramas. She said, “Akka is a very special world because it doesn’t feel like a conventional gangster story. Rudra enters a world that has its own rules, history and power structures, and what I found fascinating was the way she challenges everything that Bhavani and the women of Pernuru have built. It was exciting to be part of a story that gives its women so much agency and allows them to occupy this space with such strength. I’m so glad to see audiences on Netflix embracing the show and connecting with this unusual world and its characters.”

Writer-director Dharmaraj Shetty also discussed the inspiration behind the series and how he wanted to approach the gangster genre differently. Explaining the thought process behind its setting, he said, “I began writing a gangster story, and soon realised that it’s a genre which is saturated by all kinds of cliché. When I read the history of South India’s matriarchal traditions, I knew it was an interesting and fresh take on the gangster genre. As I researched more of the rules, values and traditions of these women-led societies, it made Akka’s world more dramatic and fun. To now see the show at #1 on Netflix India and knowing that audiences are enjoying the world we created is incredibly rewarding. I’m very happy that the story and its characters have found such a strong response with viewers.”

With its continued run at the top of Netflix India’s Top 10, Akka has brought its fictional world of power, shifting loyalties and generational legacies to a wider audience.

Written and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty and produced by YRF Entertainment, the series features Keerthy Suresh, Radhika Apte, Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Anshuman Pushkar and Monica Panwar.
