Gloucestershire rebranding as Bristol for the T20 Blast in 2027

From the 2027 T20 Blast season, Gloucestershire Cricket will take the field under a Bristol-based identity, the club announced on November 5, 2026. Board approval had been secured ahead of a members’ gathering at the County Ground on November 4, 2026, where the plans were first shared with supporters.

Chief executive Neil Priscott framed the move as creating a new dedicated T20 identity covering both the men’s and women’s sides. Jenny Hall, the club’s head of audience development, outlined the collaborative process that preceded the decision

“Over recent months, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club has worked closely with our players, our members working group, the ECB, and a number of key stakeholders to help shape an exciting new chapter in our evolution,” said Hall as quoted by Cricinfo.

The club was clear that its wider identity would not be diminished by the change.

“Building on more than 150 years of proud heritage, Gloucestershire Cricket will always remain our overarching identity and the foundation of everything we do,” said Hall.

A further members’ meeting is set for Thursday evening in Cheltenham. The club plans to publish a complete vision later in 2026, timed to align with the release of the following year’s domestic fixture list.

Why is Gloucestershire adopting a city-based T20 identity?

The primary driver is audience growth. Bristol’s student population stands at roughly 70,000, a demographic the club regards as a largely untapped base for T20 matches at the County Ground. Aligning with the city name is seen as the most direct route to converting that potential into attendances.

The Bristol sporting landscape already features several clubs that carry the city’s name. Bristol City and Bristol Rovers compete in the Football League, while Bristol Bears field both men’s and women’s teams in rugby union. Gloucestershire’s commercial thinking mirrors that city-first branding model.

Financially, the club reached a debt-free position in 2025 after receiving funds from its shareholding in the eight Hundred franchises. Separately, the club is examining the possibility of relocating to a purpose-built ground on the city’s outskirts, though access-related infrastructure challenges are still being worked through.

What is the broader context behind this T20 Blast name change?

Gloucestershire are no strangers to separate short-format identities. Between 1999 and 2013, the county competed in one-day cricket as Gloucestershire Gladiators before returning to the county name for the Blast era. Warwickshire followed a comparable path when they became Birmingham Bears in 2014, only to reverse that rebrand after the Birmingham Phoenix was established within the Hundred.

On the pitch, the men’s team claimed the T20 Blast title in 2024, one of the county’s most significant recent honours. The 2025 Blast campaign ended at the quarter-final stage, with Northamptonshire, who went on to lift the trophy, ending Gloucestershire’s run. The women’s semi-professional side reached the League Two final in 2026 but were beaten by Glamorgan. The men’s County Championship season in 2026 proved harder, with the side finishing at the foot of their division. Gloucestershire have been part of the county game across all formats since 1870.
