Koffee With Karan 9: Varun Dhawan recalls “jinx” after comparing his hits with Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh; says, “It is better to be like Ajay Devgn”
Varun Dhawan has reflected on his earlier comments about his box-office record and admitted that, with time, he has learnt to let his work speak for itself. During the latest episode of Koffee With Karan 9, the actor revisited a remark he made on the show years ago, when he spoke about his run of successful films in comparison to Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.

Looking back, Varun suggested that talking too much about professional success may not be the best approach. “What I have realised over time, after maturing a little, is that the only flex one should do is with their work. Many years ago, I came here and flexed about how many hits I had. Somewhere, it jinxed me or something,” he said.
Varun Dhawan revisits his Koffee With Karan Season 6 remark
Varun’s latest comments brought back a moment from Koffee With Karan Season 6 in November 2018. During that episode, Karan Johar asked him whether he would switch careers with Ranbir Kapoor or Ranveer Singh. Varun answered, “None,” explaining that both actors had experienced box-office failures, while he had not faced one at that stage of his career.
At the time, Varun had delivered a string of commercially successful films, including Student of the Year, Main Tera Hero, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, ABCD 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Judwaa 2. His response was widely discussed as a confident assessment of his box-office run.
On the latest episode, Karan brought up the remark while discussing Varun’s past comments about his successes. Varun chose not to revisit the numbers in detail, saying he did not want to make another boastful statement.
“I don’t want to correct you. That would feel like a flex now,” he told Karan.
Janhvi Kapoor then pointed out that the number of hits being discussed had risen to 11. Varun agreed but maintained that he did not want to make a show of his commercial record.
Varun Dhawan says Ajay Devgn treats success and failure alike
Varun also shared what he has learnt from watching other actors navigate the highs and lows of their careers. He cited Ajay Devgn as an example of someone who maintains the same attitude regardless of professional outcomes. “I don’t want to flex or say anything in that regard. When you are successful or something becomes a success, sometimes it is better to be like Ajay Devgn. He is someone I have seen treat you the same way through success and failure. It is amazing,” Varun said.
Varun’s 2018 remarks returned to online discussions in December 2024 after his film Baby John underperformed at the box office. Some social media users revisited his earlier comparison with Ranbir and Ranveer, joking that his confident statement had brought him bad luck.
