Kunal Kapoor calls Ranbir Kapoor the “perfect choice” to play Lord Ram in Ramayana
Kunal Kapoor has praised his Ramayana co-star Ranbir Kapoor, calling him the “perfect choice” to portray Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming mythological epic. The actor, who plays Lord Indra in the film, also spoke about producer Namit Malhotra’s vision for the project.
Speaking about Ranbir’s casting, Kunal said portraying Lord Ram requires a restrained performance rather than an overtly dramatic approach. He believes Ranbir possesses the qualities needed for the role.
“Ranbir is the perfect choice,” Kunal said. “Shree Ram is the hardest kind of role because you can’t perform him, you have to be him. It needs stillness, grace, an actor who can say everything while doing almost nothing. Very few people can hold a frame that quietly. Ranbir can,” he added.
Kunal also shared his appreciation for Namit Malhotra and the scale of his involvement in Ramayana. Describing him as a “visionary”, the actor said he had rarely seen someone bring the same level of commitment to a project.
“I’ve been in this industry 25 years, and I’ve rarely seen anyone bring this much passion and love to a project. The time and resources he’s poured into this are unreal. This isn’t a film for him. It’s a mission,” Kunal said.

The recently released Ramayana trailer also offers a first look at Kunal as Lord Indra, the King of Devas. The actor appears in metallic armour and is shown riding Airavata, the celestial white elephant associated with the deity.
The glimpse gives audiences an indication of the film’s visual scale while introducing Kunal’s character within its larger mythological world. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Ram, while the film features an ensemble cast in key roles from the Ramayana.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana is scheduled to release in theatres on November 5.
